Police Arrest 42 Illegal Miners Over Abduction Of Kwara Monarch, Wife

Police arrest 42 illegal miners over Kwara abduction as bandits demand ₦400m ransom for monarch and wife.

The Kwara State Police Command has arrested 42 illegal miners in connection with the abduction of a traditional ruler, Oba Salman Olátúnjí Aweda, his wife, and others in Olayinka community, Ifelodun Local Government Area.

The monarch and his wife were reportedly abducted last Saturday night when suspected bandits stormed his palace while they were asleep.

Confirming the development, the Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, said the command launched an immediate operation using drones and other security resources, leading to the arrest of the suspects.

According to him, about 10 armed attackers invaded the palace shortly after miners had earlier paid homage to the monarch, demanding money allegedly given to him during the visit.

“They broke into the palace, took him from his room, and demanded money. After he handed it over, they abducted him,” the commissioner said, adding that investigations are ongoing to determine if the arrested miners are directly linked to the crime.

He disclosed that all suspects are currently in police custody in Ilorin.
Ojo also revealed that the monarch’s brother, who was initially abducted alongside him, was later abandoned by the attackers after he became exhausted and unable to continue the journey.
Meanwhile, the abductors have reportedly contacted the community, demanding a ransom of ₦400 million for the release of the monarch and his wife.

Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government Area, Abdulrasheed Femi Yusuf, described the abduction as disturbing and assured residents that efforts are underway to secure their release.

He said security agencies, supported by local vigilantes and forest guards, have intensified search operations across surrounding areas.

The incident has heightened fears among residents, raising concerns about a resurgence of insecurity in Kwara South.
