Police Arrest Corps Member Over Alleged Rape

Men from the Ogun State Police Command, on May 12, detained Adebola Sodiq, a member of the Youth Corps, on suspicion of raping a 20-year-old woman (name withheld).

The suspect was detained in response to a report made by the victim to the Owode Egba divisional headquarters. The victim stated that on May 9, the Corp member—who also happened to be the boyfriend of one of her very close friends—came to her apartment, where she lives with her coworkers, and asked her to accompany him to the village junction so he could buy her a gift in honour of her recently celebrated birthday.

The victim informed the police that she followed the suspect because, as an intimate friend of the suspect’s girlfriend, she had no reason to suspect any wrongdoing. However, as they were leaving, the suspect urged her to accompany him to the school’s grounds so he could take his wallet.

She said to the police that despite her pleading and cries for mercy, the suspect pulled her to his room in the school compound in Agbajege village after they arrived and had unlawful carnal knowledge of her.

Following the report, CSP Olasunkanmi Popoola, the DPO for the Owode Egba division, instructed his investigators to track down the culprit, who was later detained.

The state police command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the occurrence and added that during questioning, the suspect admitted to committing the act but claimed he was unaware of what had happened to him at the time.

Oyeyemi claimed that the victim received medical attention at Owode Egba General Hospital after being transported there by the police.

He continued by saying that the state’s police chief, CP Olanrewaju Oladimeji, had ordered that the suspect be handed over to the state’s criminal investigation department for additional examination and potential prosecution.
