Pope Francis Makes An Unexpected First Appearance At The Vatican

After being discharged from the hospital two weeks ago after receiving treatment for double pneumonia, Pope Francis made his first public appearance on Sunday.

In a wheelchair, the pope made his way into the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Square to meet the applauding crowds. In the most severe health crisis of his 12-year pontificate, the 88-year-old has undergone five weeks of treatment.

In a previously unannounced action, the pope came out to the Piazza shortly before noon (1000 GMT) at the completion of the celebration of a Mass marking the Catholic Church’s Jubilee year.

Before giving a brief speech, the clergyman waved to the spectators as he approached the main altar for the ceremony in the bright sunshine.

“Happy Sunday to everyone,” the pope said, speaking in a frail voice while receiving oxygen via a small hose under his nose. “Thank you so much.”

We are thankful for the healing that God has provided for Pope and most importantly for the strength and peace that come with it.
