Pope’s Recovery Steady, Vatican Hints At Weekend Appearance

Pope Francis may likely make an appearance at the Angelus prayer this weekend, the Vatican revealed Friday, indicating that he is making “slight improvements” in his recuperation from potentially fatal pneumonia.

The pope was admitted to the Gemelli hospital in Rome for five weeks before being released on March 23 and going back to the Vatican to finish his recuperation.

Physicians have recommended a minimum of two months of recuperation.

A written text for the midday Angelus, which the pope usually delivers from the window of the Apostolic Palace, has been made public for the previous seven Sundays. The Vatican stated that the Angelus this weekend may take a new format; more information will be released on Saturday.

According to the Vatican, the pope’s voice, respiration, and motor abilities have all improved since the pneumonia that struck both of his lungs.

His infection has slightly improved, according to recent blood tests, and he is using less oxygen. Although he has only been seen in public once since his hospitalization in February, Pope Francis has continued to be engaged in his work despite his health issues.

Before departing the hospital, Francis made a rare public appearance and waved from the balcony, thanking the pilgrims below in a feeble voice. Later, a breathing tube was apparent when he was spotted in a car.

The pope is still recuperating and undergoing treatment, but he has not allowed anyone to see him outside of his closest associates.

Pope Francis attended a liturgy on Wednesday commemorating the 20th anniversary of the passing of former Pope John Paul II and saw a sermon on Friday via video link.

According to the Vatican, it is too soon to say whether he will be attending any Easter-related ceremonies that are scheduled for this year’s April 20.
