The prime minister of Bangladesh resigned and left the nation for India after weeks of violent protests.
The 76-year-old Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation was verified by officials from the Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi and the army.
The major national newspaper of the nation claims that Hasina travelled to India with her sister aboard a military helicopter.
According to Reuters, they are removing “safe shelter” from her official apartment.
According to local news, skirmishes in the capital on Sunday resulted in at least 95 deaths, including 14 police officers, and hundreds of injuries.
Conflicts between demonstrators and police on Monday allegedly resulted in the deaths of at least six persons in the Jatrabari and Dhaka Medical College regions.
A student movement opposing civil service employment quotas sparked the violent protests in July.
Later, the movement changed to express broader dissatisfaction with the nation’s authoritarian turn under Ms. Hasina’s leadership, the corruption in the government, and the state of the economy.
Throughout the tumult, security forces stood by Ms. Hasina’s government, but the demonstrators disobeyed curfews and used lethal force.
With at least 94 deaths on Sunday—14 of them police officers—it was the worst day of the turmoil.
Security officers opened fire as protesters and government supporters nationwide engaged in combat with sticks and knives.
As a result of the violence during the day, at least 300 people have died since the protests started, according to an AFP count based on information from police, government representatives, and hospital doctors.
According to an official statement, Mr Waker informed commanders on Saturday that the armed forces “always stood by the people”.
The world’s longest-serving female leader was Ms. Hasina. She escaped a jail term and multiple attempts at her life.
However, during her tenure in government, she was frequently accused of extrajudicial killings, forced disappearances, and a crackdown on her critics—all of which she disputes.
As anti-government demonstrators promised to march to the capital on Monday to demand Ms Hasina’s resignation, reports surfaced that she had left the nation.
