Ronaldo Suspended By Saudi Pro League After ‘obscene Gesture’

Published on

Cristiano Ronaldo has been punished for one match after allegedly making an obscene gesture during a match in Saudi Arabia.

Ronaldo was seen cupping his ear and continuously shoving his hand forward near his pelvis in front of opposing fans.

The incident occurred on Sunday, just minutes after Ronaldo’s team al Nassr defeated al Shabab 3-2 in the Saudi Pro League.

Ronaldo’s gesture appeared to be directed at opposing fans, who could be heard chanting “Messi” in reference to the 39-year-old’s longtime nemesis.

The suspension was issued late Wednesday night. Al Nassr’s next league game is this Thursday.

Ronaldo must also pay a punishment of 20,000 Saudi riyals (£4,210), according to the Saudi Arabia Football Federation’s Disciplinary and Ethics Committee. The decision is not subject to appeal.

Ronaldo signed as a free agent with al Nassr in late 2022, and his on-field antics have previously come under scrutiny in ultra-conservative Saudi Arabia.

In April of last year, he appeared to grip his genitals on his way to the dugout after his team lost a game.

During the Riyadh Season Cup final earlier this month, he hid a rival team scarf in his shorts after it was thrown at him as he moved into the tunnel.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
