Ecclesiastics 48:1-4,9-12
Psalm 79(80):2-3,15-16,18-19
Matthew 17:10-13
In today’s gospel, as Jesus and his disciples descend the mountain after the transfiguration, he continues to speak about John the Baptist, his forerunner. John saw himself as the one preparing the way for the Messiah. Jesus affirms this by identifying him as the Elijah to come—fulfilling Scripture: ‘Look, I will send the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the Lord’ (Malachi 4:5-6; Mark 1:2). John the Baptist is the long-awaited messenger and Elijah figure, sent to prepare hearts for the arrival of Christ.
Today, our world longs for men and women who stand boldly for the truth—people of faith, humility, courage, and prayer. As we eagerly anticipate the Lord’s return, let us stay vigilant and pray, ready to welcome Him with open hearts.
