There are various methods of teaching about the Catholic faith. Apart from the Sacred Scriptures, Sacred Tradition, and Catechesis, there is also another important method through which we too can deepen our knowledge of the faith. It is the lives of the saint together with their prayers that help us develop a mature catholic prayer life.
The stories of the saints help us believe that we too can become saints. For example, Kolbe volunteered to starve to death in a locked cell at Auschwitz, taking the place of another internee condemned by the Nazis to die slowly from starvation. For a person begging Saint Kolbe for help, the misery of giving up a drug could pale in comparison to a meditation on relentless hunger. Kolbe’s sacrifice—paying the ultimate price—can leave an electrifying image to help us face our struggles.
Kolbe’s heroism extends beyond Auschwitz. He founded the Militia of the Immaculata in 1917—a fierce organization defending the Catholic Faith. While under German occupation, he and fellow religious hid thousands of Jewish and Polish people from the Nazis and fearlessly published anti-Nazi articles.
As we continue in our journey of faith, May God stand by us throughout this day for protection, direction, healing blessings, and forgiveness, and may God grant us the grace to forgive our offenders sincerely, and may you and your family enjoy inner peace.
