Seeing Beyond The Surface

In our journey of faith, it is important to remember the danger of judging others. Often, we find ourselves quick to point out the faults and shortcomings of those around us, failing to recognize our own flaws. However, we are reminded that no one is more perceptive of a fault than someone who possesses that same fault themselves.

When we are vain, we are quick to notice vanity in others. When we struggle with anger, we easily criticize those who display irritability. The same goes for dishonesty, rudeness, and selfishness. It is a humbling truth that our ability to perceive faults in others may indicate that we have similar, if not greater, faults within ourselves.

This realization should lead us to exercise caution in our judgments and to approach others with humility and understanding. We are reminded of the words of Jesus, who said, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” (Luke 6:41). We must be mindful of the battles and struggles that others have faced, which may have left them with scars and imperfections that we cannot fully comprehend.

Just as it would be inappropriate for a civilian to criticize a soldier’s appearance after a day of battle, it is unwise for us to harshly judge others without considering the battles they have fought. What we perceive as faults may actually be the marks of honor and bravery earned through life’s challenges.

Therefore, let us approach others with grace and understanding, recognizing that we too are imperfect and in need of forgiveness. Instead of focusing on the faults of others, let us strive to cultivate humility and compassion in our own hearts. May we learn to see beyond the surface
