Six Nigerians have been detained by Thai police on suspicion of participating in an AI-powered romance scam that was discovered in Nonthaburi, close to Bangkok.
After a raid on three opulent condominiums close to the Phra Nangklao Bridge in Nonthaburi, the suspects were captured on May 22, 2026.
The group’s riverside home was linked to suspicious financial transactions during an earlier cocaine trafficking investigation in April, according to authorities, which led to the arrests.
According to police reports, officers forced entry into the apartments after the suspects refused to open their doors. According to reports, one person tried to flee through a balcony, while another hid in a bathroom and texted accomplices to let them know.
Three laptops, eighteen cell phones, and a number of bank-related documents were found at the scene. At the time of the raid, some of the confiscated devices were reportedly actively involved in scam conversations.
According to investigators, the group used AI-generated images and made fictitious video calls while pretending to be professionals like doctors, engineers, pilots, and members of the US military.
They allegedly lured older Thai women into fraudulent relationships and then demanded money under the pretense of customs clearance and other fictitious fees.
Police also disclosed that the suspects had been living in Thailand on student visas, but they had neither a valid job nor an enrollment in any school.
The six individuals are currently facing charges related to immigration violations and unlawful association, while additional fraud-related charges are expected to be filed as investigations continue.
It’s disheartening to see that some Nigerians continue to bring shame to our country through their actions abroad. Such behavior not only damages our reputation on the global stage but also perpetuates negative stereotypes, making it difficult for the world to see the good in our people. Instead of showcasing our true potential and rich culture, these individuals give others a reason to view all Nigerians with suspicion and disdain. It is crucial that we reflect on these issues and strive to promote positive representations of Nigeria everywhere we go.
