Spain’s Prime Minister Demands Explanation For Rubiales’ Kiss

Published on

Pedro Sanchez, the Spanish prime minister, has demanded an explanation from the country’s FA president, Luis Rubiales, for kissing women’s team player Jenni Hermoso on the lips after the Women’s World Cup final.

The scandal overshadowed Spain’s 1-0 win over England in Australia, with Rubiales facing criticism for his treatment of Jenni Hermoso, who later stated she ‘did not enjoy’ the kiss.

Rubiales, 45, stood with or near Spain’s Queen Letizia and FIFA president Gianni Infantino in the receiving line of dignitaries for the trophy-lifting ceremony. The players’ hands were then shaken and their cheeks kissed.

Rubiales initially defended his conduct but later conceded in a video message released following criticism from top lawmakers that he had made a mistake.

Sanchez, the prime minister, believes the statement was “insufficient” and has urged Rubiales to clarify his controversial actions.

He said: “The players have done everything to win, but it is true that there have been some unacceptable behaviours that show that in our country there is still a long way to go in terms of equality, respect, and equalization of women’s rights.

“Apologies are not enough, nor adequate. Mr Rubiales must continue to take steps to clarify what we have seen.”

Rubiales was later charged with ‘sexual violence’ by Spain’s interim Equality Minister, Irene Montero, who emphasized the significance of consent.

“There is also something I regret and it’s over something that happened between a female player and myself who enjoy a magnificent relationship the same as I have with other women players,” Rubiales had said in his apology.

“I’ve no doubt made a mistake and I have to admit it.”

It has now been revealed that Rubiales unsuccessfully begged with Hermoso on the way back from Australia to shoot an apology video with him.

According to Relevo in Spain, the travelling group, which included Rubiales and the players, was aware of the outpouring of criticism in the aftermath of the kissing episode. Rubiales is believed to have been eager to film the video at Doha Airport in order to provide an explanation.

He reportedly admitted to the player that his position was in jeopardy and asked for her assistance, only for Hermoso to decline, citing her desire to focus on the award.

Despite his best efforts, his request may have been spotted or overheard by many members of the 300-person group.

Manager Jorge Vilda is believed to have afterwards spoken with Hermoso’s family, who were allegedly advised to speak out and downplay the gravity of the situation.
