Super Falcons Held by Algeria In Goalless Draw, Set to Face Zambia in WAFCON Quarter-Finals

Nigeria’s Super Falcons settled for a goalless draw against Algeria, booking a quarter-final clash with Zambia.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria were held to a goalless draw by Algeria’s Lady Fennecs in their final group B match of the 13th Women Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday in Casablanca, setting up a quarter-final tie with Zambia’s Copper Queens.

Despite Nigeria’s dominance in possession and several chances, Algeria’s disciplined defensive setup successfully nullified the Falcons’ attacking threats. The draw also marked Algeria’s first-ever qualification to the quarter-finals of the Women’s AFCON.

Head Coach Justine Madugu made eight changes to the squad that defeated Botswana last Thursday, rotating key players in preparation for the next round. The starting line-up included Chinwendu Ihezuo, Ifeoma Onumonu, Jennifer Echegini, and the experienced Francisca Ordega.

Ordega was among the brightest sparks in Nigeria’s attack, particularly in the first half when her cross nearly led to a goal. In the second half, chances fell to Ajibade, Okoronkwo and Echegini, but none could find the breakthrough against Algeria’s resilient backline and goalkeeper Chloe N’gazi Boumrar.

The Falcons will now face Zambia in what is expected to be a high-octane quarter-final clash on Friday.

Also, Nigeria’s Flying Eagles came from behind to defeat the Junior Cheetahs of Benin Republic 4–1 in their second group match of the 2025 WAFU B U20 Boys Tournament.

After conceding early through a superb free-kick by Junior Olugbade in the 24th minute, the Eagles responded through Mohammed Abdullahi’s equaliser before half-time.

Second-half goals from Ezekiel Kpangu, Imrana Mohammed, and Abdulahi Majid sealed a comprehensive win for the Eagles, who now advance to the semi-finals. Defender Odinaka Okoro was named Man of the Match.
