The Baptism of the Lord (Year A)

Isa 42.1-4, 6-7;  Ps 28;  Acts 10.34-38; Mt 3.13-17

At the dawn of human history, God unleashed a powerful Flood of wrath to cleanse the world of humanity’s wickedness. From the safety of the ark, Noah released a dove; when it finally did not return, he knew the waters of devastation were retreating. The devastating Flood that brought death was gradually subsiding.

When John was baptizing great crowds from all places went to him. Jesus also joins the crowd and walks side by side into the muddy waters, identifying with our humanity and raising us into righteousness as God’s children.

Today, on the feast of the Lord’s baptism, we celebrate the awe-inspiring moment when the Spirit descends upon Christ in the River Jordan. Though Jesus Himself needed no forgiveness, He willingly underwent John’s baptism—a symbolic act of repentance—to set an example and reveal the profound significance of the new sacrament of baptism He would establish.

As we reflect on the Holy Spirit hovering over the cleansing waters of the Jordan, we realize this is the beginning of a greater Flood—a flood of new life in Christ that will never subside. This sacramental Flood of mercy and grace has replaced the tide of wrath forever.

Every time we receive the sacrament of baptism, the divine power of the Holy Spirit floods our souls with new life—washing away sin, increasing grace, and sealing our promise of eternal life. This is the incredible gift that transforms and renews us forever!
