The Most Influential Person On AIB This week Is Kamala Devi Harris

Kamala Devi Harris is the first female vice president and the highest-ranking female official in the history of the United States of America, She is the 49th, and current Vice-President of America.

She was born in Oakland California, on October 20, 1964. She attended a French-speaking primary school, Nocte-Dame-des-Neiges, and then F.A.C.E School. For her high school, Harris went to Westmount High School in Westmount, Quebec, and graduated in 1981.
 
After completing high school, Harris attended Howard University, in Washington D.C. While at Howard, she interned as a mailroom clerk for California senator Alan Cranston, chaired the Economics Society, and also led the debate team. Harris graduated from Howard in 1986 with a degree in political science and economics.
 
Harris then returned to California to attend law school at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. While at UC Hastings, she served as president of the Black Law Students Association. She graduated with a Juris Doctor in 1989 and was admitted to the California Bar in June 1990.
She began her career in the office of the District Attorney (DA) of Almeda County. She was later recruited to the San Francisco DA’s office and then the City Attorney of San Francisco’s office.

In 2003, she was elected DA of San Francisco. Also, in 2010, she was elected Attorney General, AG of California, and re-elected in 2014.

Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez in the 2016 Senate election to become the second African-American woman and the first South Asian American to serve in the U.S. Senate. As a senator, she advocated for healthcare reform,  federal de-scheduling of cannabis, a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, the Dream Act, strict gun control laws, and progressive tax reform.

She was picked as the running mate of Joe Biden in August 2020. Kamala Harris made history when sworn in as the 49th U.S. Vice President on January 20, 2021. She became the first woman, African-American, and Asian American to occupy the office.
 
As Vice President, she has worked to bring people together, create opportunities, help families, and safeguard fundamental freedoms.
