Thomas Tuchel, a former Chelsea coach, was named manager of England on January 1, 2025.
After Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello, the 51-year-old German has signed an 18-month contract to become the men’s team’s third non-British permanent manager.
Following England’s loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, Gareth Southgate announced his resignation in July.
After being named interim manager in August, Lee Carsley has overseen four games. He will continue to be in charge for next month’s Nations League fixtures against Greece and the Republic of Ireland.
Former Chelsea boss Tuchel, who left Bayern Munich at the end of last season, said: “I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team.
“I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already.
“To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting.”
Mark Bullingham, the chief executive, announced that the Football Association has hired “one of the best coaches in the world”.
He said: “Thomas and the team have a single-minded focus on giving us the best possible chance to win the World Cup in 2026.”
England hasn’t taken home a significant prize since the World Cup in 1966.
For the 2026 tournament, they will begin qualifying in the United States, Canada, and Mexico the following year.
Tuchel has managed Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, PSG, and Chelsea in the past.
Before being fired in September 2022, he guided the Blues to four cup finals and the Champions League. Additionally, he guided Bayern to the Bundesliga title in 2023, PSG to two Ligue 1 championships, and Dortmund to the DFB-Pokal in 2017.
A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
