Actress and reality TV star Queen Atang talked about her attire at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA), which went viral on the internet.
In an interview with BBC Pidgin, Queen claimed that wearing the dress—which was created by Toyin Lawani’s Tiannah Empire and featured elements inspired by bread—was burdensome and emotionally taxing.
She said, “I am that girl that wore 500 loaves of bread. That cloth was heavy. I first cried but i said i have to put myself together to wear this cloth. I wasn’t the one that made the dress, Tiannah Empire did. All i did was call and ask if my cloth was ready. She said it wasn’t ready but it will soon be. Then she said i should come and fit my dress, which i did. I think it took her weeks to get the dress ready but for me, the weight of that dress almost broke my waist. If you check my back, i have a serious wound because that bread is very very heavy. I literally cried while wearing that dress. The first few seconds i wore the dress, i removed it and cried well before i said i was ready to wear the cloth.”
Queen claimed that after being persuaded to go by her designer, who also insisted on a daring idea for the look, she changed her mind about attending the event.
Despite the difficulties of the attire, she continued, she went to the event and took pictures even though the red carpet had closed.
The actress stated that she did not anticipate the dress receiving widespread attention and that she only became aware of the extent of the response after it started to circulate extensively online.
Wow, a 500-loaf bread dress—truly a masterpiece! The dress has become the talk of the town, capturing everyone’s attention and admiration. Toyin Lawani’s creativity is absolutely top-notch; she is undoubtedly a genius in her craft. Her innovative and bold design continues to set new standards in the fashion world.
