In a collision near Zangoro village on the Bauchi-Maiduguri Federal Highway, nine people were burned beyond recognition and eight others were injured to varying degrees.
In a First Information Report released by the Bauchi Sector Command on Tuesday, the Federal Road Safety Corps verified the incident.
The crash happened on Monday at around 11:20 p.m., and it was reported to the FRSC five minutes later, according to the report.
According to Suleiman Adamu Toro, Senior Road Marshal Assistant, FRSC staff arrived at the scene at approximately 11:40 p.m., recording a response time of fifteen minutes.
According to Toro, 17 adult males were involved in the collision; eight of them were injured, and nine of them were confirmed dead after being burned beyond recognition.
He determined that the most likely cause of the collision was a tire burst while the commercial bus was moving.
He claims that the damaged cars and other objects found at the scene were given to the Bauchi State Police Command’s Motor Traffic Division for additional examination.
The victims were identified on Tuesday, Toro continued, after FRSC staff worked to determine their identities.
The bodies of the deceased were placed in the hospital mortuary while the injured victims were transported to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi for medical attention.
This is truly heartbreaking. We extend our deepest sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives; may they rest in perfect peace. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured, wishing them a swift and full recovery. It is crucial that drivers exercise caution and responsibility on the highway, as reckless driving puts innocent lives at risk. Let us all prioritize safety and be mindful to prevent such tragedies from happening in the future.
