Sergeant Aliyu Yusuf, a police officer, has been detained by the Adamawa State Police Command after killing Maryam “Yerbure” Abdullahi, an 80-year-old woman.
Around 9:45 p.m. on February 16, 2023, the elderly woman was shot and killed in the Jimeta-Yola suburb of Doubeli.
According to reports, the police officer shot the woman while attempting to apprehend a nearby youth.
Yusuf, who was on patrol with other police officers from the Doubelli police division, approached the young guy believed to be related to the deceased at the entrance to their home, but was resisted by villagers who wanted an explanation for his arrest.
During the subsequent altercation, Sergeant Yusuf allegedly pulled the trigger to disperse the boisterous throng but instead fatally shot the woman, killing her, while another victim, named Arfad, received bullet wounds to the chest.

The killer cop has been taken into custody, according to the state commissioner of police CP Afolabi Babatola, who expressed his condolences to the deceased’s family on Friday.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of CID has been instructed by the CP to take over the investigation, according to a statement signed by the command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje.
The statement read, “The Commissioner of Police, CP Afolabi Babatola on behalf of Adamawa state police command, Condole with the family and relative of Lt Maryam Abdullahi over the sudden and unfortunate incident that claimed her life.
“The incident occurred in the late hours on Thursday 16th February, 2023, along Doubeli Culvert, Yola North local government area.
“The Commissioner of Police, acknowledges the command’s cordial working relationship with the good people of Adamawa state. He hereby consoles the immediate family, relatives and friends of the deceased and prays for the repose of her soul.
“The CP directs the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the CID to take over the investigation and ensure the law takes its course.”
