Trump Says US To Meet With Iran Next Week

U.S. President Donald Trump has revealed that the United States will hold discussions with Iran next week to explore a possible nuclear deal, though he stressed that he does not view such an agreement as critical.

“We’re going to talk to them next week, with Iran. We may sign an agreement, I don’t know. To me, I don’t think it’s that necessary. I mean, they had a war, they fought, now they’re going back to their world. I don’t care if I have an agreement or not,” Trump stated during a press conference after the NATO summit in The Hague.

Trump indicated that his administration would pursue the same conditions it had earlier sought from Iran prior to recent tensions in the Middle East.

“The only thing we would be asking for is what we were asking for before,” he said, reaffirming that a formal deal might not be essential. He asserted that the U.S. had already neutralized Iran’s nuclear capabilities, despite intelligence reports indicating otherwise.

“We want no nuclear, but we destroyed the nuclear. In other words, it’s destroyed. I said, ‘Iran will not have nuclear.’ Well, we blew it up. It’s blown up to kingdom come, and so I don’t feel very strongly about it. If we got a document, it wouldn’t be bad. We’re going to meet with them,” Trump declared.

Trump also shared that he had consulted Secretary of State and National Security Adviser Marco Rubio about whether to pursue a deal just before taking the stage. Trump expressed optimism that Iran could be convinced to enter an agreement.

Rubio emphasized that any deal would hinge on Iran’s readiness to negotiate directly with the U.S. instead of relying on intermediaries.
