Wednesday Of Week 24 In Ordinary Time

1 Corinthians 12:31-13:13
Psalm 32(33):2-5,12,22
Luke 7:31-35

STRIVE TO LIVE BETTER AND TO LOVE BETTER

The passage from today’s first reading emphasizes Paul’s awareness that the individuals he had originally preached to and who had embraced his Gospel message were ordinary people who once constituted a fervent faith community. However, they had strayed from their path.

These individuals were leading lives marked by unlawful and sinful practices, yet continued to outwardly practice their faith, seemingly disregarding the impact of their negative behavior. Paul addresses their misconception, highlighting the fact that they cannot deceive God.

He underscores the timeless truth that God’s perception differs from that of humans. Despite their transgressions, Paul offers hope, encouraging even the most errant among them to pursue the loftiest virtues of faith, hope, and love, with love being paramount.

In reflecting on the contemporary generation, it becomes pertinent to consider whether we are content with inhabiting disparate worlds to the extent of rendering ourselves ineffective.

Have we become desensitized to the injustices prevalent in our society, as well as to the suffering and despair of others, thereby failing to respond in a manner befitting our Christian calling? Are we actively leading lives characterized by compassion?

The Lord has illuminated the path to love, thereby summoning us to embody courage and to continually strive for improvement in our conduct, our existence, and our capacity to love. God help us all. Amen.
