The widow of the slain anti-drug mayor of Uruapan, Mexico, has pledged to continue her deceased husband’s battle against organized crime after being inaugurated as his replacement on Wednesday, November 5.
Grecia Quiroz was sworn into office in front of the Michoacan state congress, where she gave a heartfelt speech accusing federal officials of disregarding multiple requests for assistance from her husband, Carlos Manzo.
“Carlos Manzo’s legacy will continue, even if his voice has been silenced,” she said. “This will go on.”
Manzo, aged 40, was gunned down on Saturday, November 1, while attending a Day of the Dead public gathering in Uruapan — a city central to Mexico’s extensive avocado-growing area and one of the nation’s key centers for cartel-related violence. He had held the position for just over a year, vigorously campaigning against drug trafficking organizations and frequently condemning their actions in both interviews and social media posts.
His murder sparked widespread public anger and demonstrations from backers who felt he was achieving advancements in tackling the area’s escalating insecurity. Manzo was recognized for participating in security patrols wearing a bulletproof vest, underscoring the dangers he encountered.
In the wake of his assassination, President Claudia Sheinbaum’s government revealed a fresh security initiative for Michoacan, boosting the presence of federal troops in the state. Quiroz will act as mayor until 2027, finishing the term her husband secured in the 2024 election.
Michoacan hosts some of Mexico’s most dominant and brutal criminal syndicates, including the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and La Nueva Familia Michoacana, both labeled as terrorist organizations earlier this year by U.S. President Donald Trump.
