LASU Removes Student Affairs Dean Over Certificate Racketeering

Prof. Tajudeen Olumoko, the dean of student affairs of Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, was removed after an online allegation claimed that the university engaged in certificate racketeering.

According to the investigation, depending on the degree in question, a credential racketeering syndicate charged interested individuals anywhere from N2 million to N3 million for genuine Lagos State University certificates.

Olumoko was fired two days after the report was made public.

On Wednesday, Nov. 8, a source verified that Olumoko had been dismissed from her position and Dr Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, a senior lecturer in the Department of Political Science, had been named the new acting DSA.

The source said, “Yes the DSA has indeed been removed from office; I’m sure an official statement will be issued to that effect soon.”

On Tuesday, November 7, the Lagos State House of Assembly summoned the Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, the Senate of the university, and other senior staff members in response to accusations of extortion and certificate racketeering made against the institution.

For the sake of the school’s reputation, Speaker of the House Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa requested on Tuesday that the relevant officials at the institution be invited in order to gather information regarding the claim.

“I agree that the committee should invite those to be invited to establish facts about the allegation, but we must not because of that destroy our institution’s reputation,” Obasa, an alumnus of the institution, said adding that if anyone is found wanting, such a person should be sanctioned.

Hon. Owolabi Ajani moved the resolution under the heading “Matter of Urgent Public Importance,” informing his colleagues that in order for the House to investigate the allegations, it was necessary to invite the Commissioner, the VC, and other parties.
