The Anambra State Government has arrested two suspects for allegedly engaging in illegal revenue collection in the state. This move is part of the government’s efforts to curb unauthorized revenue collection and promote transparency in the state’s revenue system.
According to reports, the suspects were arrested at different locations in Anambra, including UNIZIK Junction and Regina Junction, Awka, for unlawfully extorting money from motorists and tricycle operators. They were found with fake authority papers and were masquerading as government revenue agents.
The Anambra State Board of Internal Revenue, in collaboration with the State Anti-Touting Agency, has intensified its enforcement operations against illegal levy collection and related criminal activities across the state. The suspects have been charged in court and are facing prosecution.
The Chairman of the Anambra Internal Revenue Service (AIRS), Greg Ezeilo, warned that the state government will not tolerate any form of unauthorized revenue collection. He urged taxpayers to only pay their taxes to authorized personnel and to report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.
In recent times, Anambra State has witnessed a series of crackdowns on illegal revenue collectors, with several suspects arrested and prosecuted. The state government has also implemented measures to promote transparency and accountability in revenue collection.
