Bruno Fernandes Named New Manchester United Captain

Bruno Fernandes has been named Manchester United’s new club captain, succeeding Harry Maguire, who was stripped of the honour by coach Erik ten Hag.

Since Ten Hag withdrew the defender’s status as an automatic pick after two matches last season, the Portuguese midfielder has been the de facto captain.

England international Harry Maguire stated on social media that United manager Erik Ten Hag had sacked him from the captaincy on Sunday.

Since joining United in January 2020, Fernandes has contributed 54 assists and 64 goals throughout 185 matches, and he has twice been named the team’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year.

Bruno Fernandes will make his debut as captain on Saturday night when United and Arsenal square off in the opening match of their preseason tour of the United States.

A club statement confirming Fernandes’ new role said: “The Portuguese midfielder has already worn the armband for United on numerous occasions and Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he will now lead the team permanently.

“Fernandes has scored 64 goals and contributed 54 assists in just 185 games for the club since joining in 2020.

“As captain, the two-time Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year will continue to drive the highest standards throughout the squad as United push for success in the 2023/24 season and beyond.”

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
