CAF Fine Libya $50,000 Over Misconduct Against Benin During AFCON Qualifiers

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has fined the Libyan Football Federation $50,000 for wrongdoing during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

On the final day of the qualifiers, Benin drew 0-0 with Libya in Benghazi to secure a spot in the continental final.

The result of the match enraged Libyan fans, who resorted to throwing stones and bottles at the visiting squad.

Benin’s head coach, Gernot Rohr, claimed that his players and officials were assaulted by supporters and police after the final whistle.

The behavior of the Libyan Football Federation’s supporters and officials before and after the game led the CAF Disciplinary Board to declare in a statement that the organization had violated Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.

The CAF Disciplinary Board penalized the Libyan Football Federation USD 50,000 and mandated that it play its next two official national team games behind closed doors.

“The CAF Disciplinary Board found the Libyan Football Federation guilty of violating articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code for the behavior of its supporters and officials during and after the match.

“The Libyan Football Federation was ordered to play its next two (2) official national team matches behind closed doors and the CAF Disciplinary Board imposed a fine of USD 50,000 on the Libyan Football Federation.”

This comes months after the LFF was fined $50,000 for the bungled game against Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

The Nigerian national team spent more than 20 hours stuck at Al-Abraq International Airport before abandoning the game.
