Enugu seals state X-ray unit, cites unsafe operations

The new Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, sealed the X-ray section of the Poly General Hospital in Asata on Wednesday.

Ugwu sealed the unit during an on-the-spot inspection by him and a team of the Ministry of Health officials, having identified the X-ray unit of the hospital as an unsafe practice with regulatory breaches.

The commissioner explained that the action was necessary to protect patients, staff, and the community from potential hazards associated with improper handling and operation of radiology equipment.

He stated that the safety of the citizens was non-negotiable and added that any health facility operating without meeting required safety and operational standards would face immediate sanctions.

This action will serve as a warning as Gov. Peter Mbah will not compromise on the quality of healthcare delivery.

“This inspection revealed several violations, including the absence of proper radiation shielding and failure to maintain essential safety protocols,” Ugwu said.

The commissioner assured the public that the facility would resume its X-ray services only after rectifying all violations and undergoing a follow-up inspection by the Ministry of Health.
