FG Launches N50 Million Health Fund to Support Cancer Patients

In a significant step towards easing the burden of cancer treatment, the Federal Government has unveiled a groundbreaking N50 million Social Determinants of Health Fund, aimed at helping vulnerable cancer patients cope with non-medical expenses that can hinder their access to essential care.

During a vibrant launch event in Abuja on Wednesday, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Iziaq Salako, emphasized that this initiative is designed to tackle the everyday challenges faced by patients, including transportation, accommodation, food insecurity, and a lack of social support. “We want to ensure that these barriers do not stand in the way of life-saving treatment,” he stated passionately.

With more than 600 cancer patients already reaching out for assistance, over 200 of those have been verified through a thorough screening process that includes medical directors and attending physicians. Verified beneficiaries will receive at least N100,000 each to help cover their essential needs.

“The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare is committing fifty million naira as our initial contribution to this vital fund,” Salako announced. He underscored the fact that despite significant investments in cancer care infrastructure, treatment subsidies, and awareness campaigns, many patients still find it difficult to embark on or complete their treatment due to these indirect costs.

“Transportation, accommodation in urban centers where specialized services are accessible, food insecurity, and insufficient family support can lead to treatment delays and, ultimately, poorer health outcomes,” he explained.

Salako highlighted that social determinants of health play a crucial role in the financial challenges associated with cancer care. This initiative came to life following recommendations from the National Cancer Control Plan 2026–2030 Technical Working Group, which has also mobilized personal donations amounting to millions of naira to launch this fund.

He called for robust transparency and accountability in managing the fund and reiterated the government’s ambitious goal to cut Nigeria’s cancer burden by 50 percent by 2030, through expanded screening, enhanced treatment options, and comprehensive patient support services. Together, we can make a difference in the fight against cancer!
