The ex-Manchester United midfielder Hannibal Mejbri, presently with Burnley, faces a misconduct charge from the Football Association due to claims that he spat in the direction of Leeds United supporters during the previous month.
The 22-year-old Mejbri entered the field as a replacement player during the 83rd minute of that Premier League encounter between the two teams at Turf Moor on October 18, a game that the Clarets secured with a 2-0 victory.
However, reports indicate that the supposed event occurred 16 minutes prior to his entry onto the pitch, at a time when the player, previously with Manchester United, was in the process of warming up on the sidelines.
Lancashire Police conducted an investigation into the situation following a formal complaint lodged by a supporter from Leeds who was located in the visiting fans’ area of the stadium.
An FA statement said: “It is alleged the player acted in breach of the laws of the game and/or in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or indecent behaviour by spitting at or in the direction of Leeds United supporters around the 67th minute.
“Hannibal Mejbri has until Friday, 28 November to provide a response.”
The player, who progressed through the youth system at Manchester United, was introduced to the action after 83 minutes had elapsed and received a yellow card during the stoppage time period.
In the prior season, the 22-year-old seemed to mock the Leeds fans as he was being taken off the field in Burnley’s 1-0 triumph in the Championship at Elland Road, lifting both arms high in the air while walking past the goal line and heading toward the bench area.
This charge from the FA arrives just weeks following the confirmation from Lancashire Police that they had launched an internal review of the circumstances.
In their own statement they said: ‘Lancashire Police are aware of an alleged incident involving a Burnley player during the second half of the Premier League game between Burnley and Leeds United at Turf Moor.
‘We are currently working with Burnley Football Club to establish the facts.’
