Global Life Expectancy Falls After Covid Pandemic

According to the United Nations, global life expectancy has fallen since the Covid pandemic hit.

The world average was nearly two years lower in 2021 than in 2019, its latest World Population Report found.

In some countries, such as Bolivia and Russia, the decline was even more dramatic in more than four years. The United Nations found that the COVID pandemic has driven changes in the world population in a new report published on Monday.

It said global life expectancy fell to 71 years in 2021 – down from 72.8 years in 2019.

“In Central and Southern Asia and Latin America and the Caribbean, life expectancy at birth decreased by about three years between 2019 and 2021.

“In contrast, the combined population of Australia and New Zealand had a 1.2 year advantage due to lower mortality rates for some causes of death during the pandemic,”

Meanwhile, the United Nations said the COVID pandemic is responsible for a “significant reduction in life expectancy” in some countries.

Bolivia, Botswana, Lebanon, Mexico, Oman and Russia saw declines in more than four years between 2019 and 2021, the report said.

The United Nations estimates that global life expectancy will increase to about 77.2 years in 2050.
