“Install CCTV Cameras To Help Us Fight Insecurity,” Police Tells Nigerians

The Nigeria Police Force has advised Nigerians to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) in their residences, workplaces, and commercial spaces in order to combat insecurity in the nation.

The advisory was given on Friday in a statement by SP Chris Anyanwu, the Ebonyi State Police Command’s public relations officer.

Anyanwu claimed that the device had, in the past, helped the security agency’s efforts to catch thieves and other criminals.

According to the spokesman, CCTV was crucial in the capture of a three-man gang that targeted supermarkets and retail shops in Ebonyi for robbery attacks.

In the Ebonyi State capital, Abakaliki, the gang robbed bank customers and POS operators who were at the point of withdrawing money.

Anyanwu stated that following a recent robbery incident, revisiting CCTV video recordings helped in apprehending the infamous hoodlums.

The perpetrators used a power bike to carry out their malicious deeds, and they were armed with recovered firearms.

“They enter shops in the guise of buying stuff, while their rider gangmate lurks around to dispossess customers of their valuables at gunpoint,” he said.

“Luck ran out of them when they robbed a fashion shop at No.19 Udemezue Street, Abakaliki on Wednesday and they were captured on a CCTV camera.

“They were intercepted and arrested by the Crack Team of Ebonyi Command.”

The PRO claimed that CCTV cameras were responsible for enabling their capture and asked citizens to put up surveillance in and around their immediate surroundings.
