Libya: NFF Pulls Super Eagles From AFCON Qualifier

The Super Eagles of Nigeria team has been excluded from Tuesday’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya by the Nigeria Football Federation.

After an arduous 12-hour struggle at Libya’s Al Abraq International Airport, where the team was left stuck following their arrival on Sunday afternoon, October 13, this decision has been made.

The Nigerian delegation’s leased aircraft was reportedly redirected to Al Abraq, a tiny airstrip usually used for hajj activities, mid-flight while they were en route to Benghazi for the crucial qualifier.

Nigerian officials and players were left trapped after the diversion, and the Libyan Football Federation did not provide any support to improve their circumstances.

In a statement on Monday, the NFF detailed the frustrating situation, explaining that: “The Nigerian delegation for Tuesday’s 2025 AFCON qualifier against Libya is still at Al Abraq Airport, 12 hours after landing. The chartered ValueJet aircraft was, strangely and in a dangerous manner, diverted to the small airport just as the pilot was completing his approach to Benghazi Airport,” the NFF stated.

The players, who are worn out and angry, have decided not to play in the match, the NFF has also announced.

“Players have resolved not to play the match any longer, and NFF officials are making plans to fly the team back home,” the statement concluded.

The team is essentially being pulled out of the match as the NFF is currently making arrangements for them to return to Nigeria.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
