A contentious discussion over the realities of living in Nigeria vs outside has been sparked by a video that is making the rounds on social media site X (previously Twitter).
A Nigerian speaker in the viral video compares the stability and peace of mind that come from making only $5,000 outside with the lifestyle and spending power that ₦30 million affords in Nigeria.
“I’m not saying people aren’t living well in Nigeria,” he begins. “But the kind of pressure that will be on ₦30 million is different. One bad policy can wipe it out. No insurance. The economy is unstable. But $5,000 abroad will always be $5,000.”
The speaker asserts that $5,000 in a stable nation goes a lot farther in terms of quality of life, even in spite of the huge disparity in currency values.
He highlights how people overseas can stretch even a little wage into a comfortable living by having access to established systems like mortgages, auto loans, and health or property insurance.
“With $5,000, you can drop a deposit for a car, secure a small condo, and still sleep peacefully. In Nigeria, with ₦30 million, you’ll spend on everything—taxes, agberos, bribes, lesson teachers, and even feeding the tutor who comes to your house.”
“Abroad, even children are fed at school. In Nigeria, you hire a lesson teacher, then feed them too. Abroad, basic needs are structured into the system. In Nigeria, you’re the system.”
Some people pointed out that Nigeria still offers emotional and cultural fulfillment, even when living elsewhere may provide systems and stability.
Others went on to say that one’s location, lifestyle choices, and financial discipline all affect how much money goes, whether it’s ₦30 million or $5,000.
Nevertheless, the video has rekindled long-running debates about migration, money, and what prosperity really means in Nigeria.
The validity of this view depends on individual circumstances, including cost of living, personal goals, family considerations, and access to opportunities.
While some may find that living abroad provides better security and amenities, others might value staying in Nigeria for cultural, familial, or economic reasons.
