A mother has been sentenced for killing her newborn daughter by hurling her out a window because she “thought a baby would ruin her career,” a court heard.
Katarina Jovanovic, 28, received a seven-and-a-half-year term after being convicted of manslaughter.
Katarina was a top Porsche lawyer from Lauffen am Neckar, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany.
She appeared before a judge at Heilbronn District Court on Wednesday, July 3.
The court heard that Jovanovic secretly gave birth at home on September 12, 2023, before throwing the infant out her flat window.
The newborn, who was just minutes old, plunged nearly four metres into the road below and sustained a smashed skull.
Soon after the atrocity unfolded, traumatised passerby discovered her, and cops rushed to the site.
Prosecutors told the court that Jovanovic believed having a child would jeopardise her position as an executive in the luxury automobile manufacturer’s legal department.
They informed the court that she purposefully kept her pregnancy hidden from coworkers and neighbours.
Public prosecutor Mareike Hafendoerfer said: “The accused was not prepared to put her life plans, especially her professional advancement, on hold for a child.
“That was her decision when the baby was born, and as a result, the criteria for a murder conviction are fulfilled.”
Jovanovic’s lawyers claimed she accidently dropped the baby after giving birth at home and had no idea she was pregnant.
Defence attorney Malte Hoech, 53, said: “It is a drama that affects me personally. My client did not even know that she was pregnant.
“When she suddenly held the bloody baby in her hands, she was in an exceptional psychological situation.
“It was an accident, she dropped the baby. How the child ended up over the windowsill remains to be determined.”
The court accepted the manslaughter charge and sentenced Jovanovic to seven and a half years in prison.
Her lawyers claim they intend to appeal the conviction after arguing for a sentence of only three years.
Neighbours earlier informed local media they were unaware Jovanovic was pregnant.
One said: “Nobody noticed that the woman was pregnant. Recently she had changed and was no longer talking to us.
“We thought she was stressed at work.”
A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
