Motherhood: Help! My Child Tells Lies, How Do I Teach My Child To Be Honest? 4

Hello Great Mothers!

As highlighted in our previous article, teaching children honesty from a young age lays the groundwork for nurturing healthy relationships in their lives. Relationships are the fabric of life, spanning various domains such as home, school, work, and places of worship.

Therefore, instilling the value of honesty early on becomes an integral part of their character development, influencing their interactions and leaving a positive impact on those around them.

Research shows that the rationale behind the act of telling lies by our children varies according to their age. And so, the way we handle them differs.

Some of these ways were discussed in previous articles. Here is another way:

When your 8 years and above child tell lies
Children at this age tell lies deliberately.
They tell lies to cover up what they have done wrongly or forget to do. They also lie to impress their friends. When you discover that your 8 years or older child lies. Though it is difficult, you have to be calm, to be in control of the situation.

Call your child’s attention to it, when he/she admits it, educate him/her about the consequences of telling lies, and most importantly, he/she will not be trusted by her friends when they find out. Let them know that they don’t have to tell lies to impress anyone and that being honest will make people appreciate them more.

Also, when you overhear your child telling his/her friends about something that did not happen, do not embarrass your child in the presence of his/her friends. Wait for a chance to spend time with him/her alone.

However, as mothers, we must create a nurturing and peaceful atmosphere in our homes. An atmosphere that gives our children the opportunity to be able to open up to us and talk to us about anything bothering them. When children know that they can approach you and discuss anything with you, their chances of telling lies are small.

God notices your dedication to caring for your home; He will bless you accordingly. So, be joyful, for a happy mother nurtures a happy home.
