MTN Closes All Stores Nationwide Following Subscriber Protests and Vandalism In Lagos

MTN, the biggest telecom company in Nigeria, has stated that it is closing all of its stores and service centers due to a surge of anger from its subscribers.

This judgment follows the Sunday line-barring of several users whose SIM registration and National Identification Number (NIN) did not match. A crowd is shown vandalizing an MTN office in FESTAC Town, Lagos State, in a widely shared viral video on social media. Outraged by the network outage, the throng broke down a barricade fence outside the headquarters.

Benjamin Hundeyin, a public relations officer for the Lagos State Police, verified that the FESTAC DPO and his group had successfully restored order at the location.

“This should not be the way to go!” Hundeyin commented, urging for peaceful resolution.

In response to the disturbance, MTN declared that its stores would close nationwide on July 30, 2024. Customers were informed of the brief shutdown by the corporation through a statement that was posted on Twitter X. As the situation progresses, more information should be released.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
