The Oyo State Government and the 33 local government councils will spend N4.278bn to conduct chairmanship and councillorship elections scheduled for December 29, 2026.
The state Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday following the state Executive Council meeting.
Oyelade said the council approved the payment of the state’s counterpart funding to the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission to commence preparations for the elections.
According to him, the local governments will provide 60 per cent of the election funding, amounting to N2.566,800.000bn, while the state government will contribute 40 per cent, amounting to N1,711,200,000bn.
The commissioner said the elections would hold across the state’s 33 local government areas.
The council also approved N437,446,393.58m for the accreditation requirements of the Nursing Programme of Abiola Ajimobi Technical University.
Oyelade said the funding would support the university’s diversification from a purely science and technology-oriented institution and its drive towards self-sustainability.
He said the university was at the final stage of the accreditation process, adding that failure to meet the professional accreditation deadline could put the investment in the programme at risk.
The commissioner said the Seyi Makinde administration had already spent more than N3bn on equipment for the take-off of the nursing programme.
The council further approved N6.744bn as the state government’s 50 per cent counterpart funding for the construction, renovation and equipping of the Oyo Annex of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology.
Oyelade said Oyo East Local Government Area would provide the other 50 per cent, bringing the total funding for the project to N13.489bn.
Explaining the rationale for the funding, Oyelade said, “About 70 per cent of patients accessing services at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, are from Oyo and its environs.”
The commissioner said the council commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his development efforts and cooperation with the 33 local government councils.
