President Tinubu Orders Immediate Release Of Minors Arrested For Hunger Protests

President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate release of minors who were arrested and are currently facing prosecution related to their participation in the #EndBadGovernance protests.

Tinubu sends second ministerial list today

According to the minister, the youngsters’ immediate release was ordered by the president, regardless of any pending legal proceedings.

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction was also instructed by the President to take immediate action to ensure the welfare of those minors and to help facilitate their seamless reunification with their parents or guardians, wherever they may be in the nation.

Additionally, Tinubu ordered the creation of a commission led by the ministry of humanitarian affairs to examine all matters pertaining to the arrest, confinement, treatment, and ultimately, release of the minors.

The government summoned 72 children before a Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday, November 1, 2024, for their involvement in the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests, which infuriated and humiliated Nigerians.

Accused of treason, among other offenses, the defendants were taken into custody in states such as Kaduna, Abuja, Gombe, Jos, Katsina, and Kano. Some of them fainted in court, seeming thin and malnourished. Seventy-two juveniles were arraigned, and the presiding judge, Obiora Egwuatu, gave them N10 million bail.

Good gesture from the President.
