FREE THYSELF FROM INSULTS

Today, the Church celebrates the memorial of St. Anthony of Padua. He was born in Portugal and was already a regular canon. Later, he joined the newly founded Order of Minors with the intention of spreading the faith in Africa.

However, he ended up preaching in Italy and France, attracting many people to the true teachings of the Church. St. Anthony was known for writing sermons filled with doctrine and a refined style. He also taught theology to his fellow friars on the request of St. Francis. He passed away in Padua.

In today’s gospel, the Lord warns us against insulting others. Calling someone a “fool” or “renegade” is not only insulting to the person but is also disrespectful to God, who created all human beings in His image and likeness. Therefore, we should be careful with the names we use for others as it may reflect how we see God in them.

If we are the ones insulted, Jesus assures us in John 16:33 that we can find peace in Him, despite the troubles we may face in the world. Offenses may come our way, as mentioned in Luke 17:1. It’s inevitable that we will face insults, embarrassment, and verbal attacks, but we are encouraged to respond with kindness and not seek revenge.

Instead of retaliating, we are reminded in Romans 12:19 that vengeance belongs to the Lord. We are urged to trust Him and let go of our anger, knowing that He will handle the situation justly.

By staying calm and entrusting the offense to God, we can find peace and healing. Letting go and allowing God to handle the situation will ultimately bring about a positive outcome, and we will emerge stronger from the experience. Trusting God to handle offense brings peace to our lives.

PRAYER

May God give us the grace to see Him in our brothers & sisters. Amen. Happy Feast Day of St. Anthony.
