Bishop of Rome and A Teacher of Faith
When Pope Pelagius II died in 590, the people of Rome chose Gregory as his successor. Reluctantly, he accepted, becoming the first monk to be elected pope. Over the next fourteen years, despite battling constant ill health, Pope Gregory I rose to become one of the most influential popes in history. He introduced strict guidelines to ensure responsible management of Church property and finances, took measures to prevent abuses, increased transparency, and expanded charitable efforts—nearly depleting the papal treasury. He also built strategic military and political alliances that strengthened the papacy.
Pope Gregory standardized the liturgy by establishing clear guidelines and rubrics. He structured prayers, the order of the Mass, and the liturgical year. The chant he developed became known as “Gregorian Chant.” With a missionary zeal, he also began converting England’s Anglo-Saxons.
In addition to writing Scripture commentaries, Pope Gregory authored the “Pastoral Rule,” a guide for bishops and church leaders outlining their responsibilities and the expected conduct in both their personal and public lives. His “Dialogues” collection shares inspiring visions, miracles, and stories of saints, including an early biography of St. Benedict. His roughly 800 letters provide valuable insights into the ecclesiastical, social, and political landscape of his era. The practical theological and pastoral advice found in these letters continues to influence Church leadership to this day. .
