Tems Reveals Why Foreigners Should Visit Ghana And Lagos Before Judging Africa

Grammy-winning singer Temilade Openiyi, better known by her stage name Tems, has called on the world to see past stereotypes and discover African cultures, beginning with Lagos and Ghana.

In an interview with Fashion Bomb Daily at the 2025 Met Gala in New York, Tems said that the beauty of Africa is found in its diversity and inventiveness and urged visitors to visit Lagos and Ghana to get a sense of what life in Africa is really like.

She said, “I always encouraged people to go to Lagos and Ghana for vacation. Just go and see for yourself before you make an opinion [about Africa]. See it for yourself and see how you feel.

“I think it [the beauty of Africa] is in the creativity, the daily efforts, the looks, the songs, the traditions and the cultures.”

“We [Africans] can go further in every single aspect of sound. We are not just Afrobeats. There is Amapiano, Afrosoul, R&B, Afro Jazz. There are so many genres in African music that people are not all the way tapped into yet,” the singer said.

That’s a great reminder! Experiencing a place firsthand truly broadens our understanding and appreciation. Ghana and Lagos are vibrant destinations with rich cultures, warm hospitality, and unique histories. Visiting them can offer invaluable insights beyond any descriptions.

Safe travels if you’re planning a visit!
