Trump Claims London Mayor, Sadiq Khan Is Seeking To Implement Sharia Law

US President Donald Trump, addressing the United Nations General Assembly, inaccurately asserted that London’s Muslim mayor plans to impose Sharia law, as part of an extended speech on migration and Europe’s perceived decline.

Trump started by condemning London’s leadership, repeatedly labeling the mayor “terrible.” “I look at London, where you have a terrible mayor, terrible, terrible mayor, and it’s been so changed,” he stated. He then claimed, “Now they want to go to Sharia law.”

These comments were embedded in a wider argument about what he called the harmful impacts of migration in Europe. “Europe has been invaded by a force of illegal aliens like nobody has ever seen before,” Trump declared. He further cautioned that without immediate action, “Both the immigration and their suicidal energy ideas will be the death of Western Europe if something is not done immediately.”

Trump also criticized the UN, alleging it was “funding an assault on Western countries and their borders.” He stressed multiple times that Europe was in “serious trouble,” warning that its current path was unsustainable.

In his speech, Trump reiterated his claims about London, asserting that the city had drastically changed under the mayor’s leadership. “I look at London, where you have a terrible mayor, terrible, terrible mayor, and it’s been changed, it’s been so changed. Now they want to go to Sharia law. But you are in a different country, you can’t do that,” he said, reinforcing his view that European governance and immigration policies were jeopardizing the continent.

Experts have broadly refuted the claim that London’s mayor is attempting to implement Sharia law. Although the mayor is Muslim, UK law remains secular, and Sharia law in the country applies only in limited civil matters through voluntary arbitration tribunals, which cannot supersede national legislation.
