UK Government To Make MAJOR Changes To Driving License This Year

UK citizens and residents may soon be able to stop presenting their driving license as proof of age.

According to confirmation from the UK government, a digital version will be released this year. Digital versions of official documents will be stored in a ‘wallet’ on a new app that will be released this summer. The first step will be a veteran’s card, then a pilot’s license. The wallet will be secured by utilising security technologies like facial recognition that are currently present in contemporary smartphones.

But don’t worry if you still prefer your tiny plastic card. Official records will continue to be accessible, the government announced.

According to Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle, the government aims to have a variety of documents, such as DBS checks and all other government-issued credentials, accessible inside the wallet by the end of 2027.

“The overflowing drawer filled with government letters and hours spent waiting on hold to get a basic appointment, along with CDs, the Walkman, and flip phones, will soon be consigned to history,” he said.

“Every letter or identity document you obtain from the government could be issued to you virtually thanks to Gov.UK Wallet.

“Those who decide to use Gov.UK Wallet will have greater security and trust than ever before, making it simpler to verify their eligibility for benefits or verify their age when purchasing alcohol or do-it-yourself supplies. Crucially, by giving people ownership over their own data, it also creates enormous opportunity to greatly simplify interactions with public services.

“In order to implement our Plan for Change, we will be transforming the way the public sector uses technology. When combined with this new technology, which people can use on their own, we will reduce the amount of time people spend on tedious procedures so they can concentrate on the things that really matter to them.”

According to the government, the app should also make it much simpler to use services like reporting a misplaced passport or enrolling for childcare. Additionally, it will eliminate the need to wait for digital credentials to come in the mail by enabling them to be accessed instantly after a successful application.

It will also assist prevent important documents from becoming lost inside filing cabinets or during house transfers.

“This is a game changer for the millions of people who use their driving license as ID,” stated Heidi Alexander, the transport secretary.

The invention increases the speed, ease, and security of daily interactions while returning control to the people.

The digital overhaul coincides with ambitions to improve public services using data and digital tools, including bringing AI tools to the Civil Service to expedite work in Whitehall, and save £45 billion in efficiency.

“A lot of companies have chosen to downsize, and maybe that was the right thing for them. We chose a different path. Our belief was that if we kept putting great products in front of customers, they would continue to open their wallets.”
