Woman Arrested In Spain For Selling Her Baby To A Family

A 37-year-old woman in Spain has been accused of selling her newborn for 2,000 euros to a family in Cordoba.

The infant is now under the protection of the Junta de Andalucía’s social services, and the mother has been detained by the National Police, along with four others implicated in the case.

The probe started in March this year after the mother herself lodged a complaint. She alleged that a family in Cordoba had abducted her newborn daughter and demanded 3,000 euros to allow her to see the child again.

The complainant claimed that, in November 2024, she met a 24-year-old man at a party in Madrid. She confided in him about her fear that social services would remove her daughter if she gave birth in the capital, as they had already taken custody of her six other children.

According to the story she concocted for the police, the man offered to take her to Cordoba and support her until she gave birth. The complainant said she intended to return to Madrid with the baby after the birth, but the Cordoba family promised to bring her back a few days later.

The woman further alleged that, when she didn’t regain custody of her daughter after a week, she began receiving threats from the family, demanding 3,000 euros for her month-long stay in Cordoba if she wished to see her child again.

Initial investigations revealed inconsistencies in her account. In truth, the biological mother had reportedly agreed to sell her daughter for 2,000 euros to a couple in Cordoba undergoing fertility treatments.

Investigators discovered that, after being discharged, the complainant visited the civil registry in Cordoba with the alleged buyers. There, the biological mother and the intended “father” were registered as the newborn’s parents.

The man then withdrew 2,000 euros from an ATM and handed it to the mother. Afterward, another family member drove her back to Madrid.

The police also learned that the mother’s six other children were removed from her care following a 2022 court order, which determined that the children were in a state of neglect. All six were placed under the guardianship of the Madrid region.

According to the investigation, the woman later regretted selling her daughter, prompting the family to demand the return of the 2,000 euros they paid, plus an additional 1,000 euros for expenses incurred during her month in Cordoba.

The National Police arrested the mother and the four family members who purchased the baby. The buyers were apprehended while heading to a pediatric appointment.
