Chimamanda Adichie Reveals Why She Didn’t Announce Birth Of Her Twin Sons

In 2024, well-known Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie announced that she had twin boys, expanding her family to include her daughter, who is nine years old.

Adichie talked about her personal losses, the great public interest in her life, and the challenge of juggling parenthood and writing in an interview with The Guardian.

The 47-year-old Adichie has long avoided the spotlight, even after being married to doctor Ivara Esege in 2009.

“I want to protect my children,” she said. “I’m OK with having them mentioned, but I don’t want the piece to become about them.”

“Nigerians are… they want to know about your personal life. Because of that, I am resistant. I very rarely talk about it,” she explained.

After a decade-long break from fiction, Adichie is set to release Dream Count, a novel exploring themes of immigration, motherhood, and marriage. She admitted motherhood had caused a creative block.

“I had a number of years in which I was almost existentially frightened that I wouldn’t write again. It was unbearable,” she said.

The breakthrough came while writing Notes on Grief, following her father’s death in 2020.

Reflecting on her new book, she realized, “My God, it’s about my mother. It wasn’t intentional. I’m happy that it’s not a sad book. She wouldn’t want a sad book dedicated to her.”

Live with Purpose, Love with Passion. Remember to be happy

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
