Tokyo 2025 World Championships: Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan Claims Silver in 100m Hurdles

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan secured a silver medal in the 100m hurdles at the Tokyo 2025 World Championships.

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan claimed silver in the women’s 100m hurdles at the Tokyo 2025 World Championships after clocking an impressive 12.29 seconds in the final.

The 28-year-old world record holder had earlier won her semifinal heat on Monday with a 12.36-second run to qualify for the showdown. Despite a slow start in the final, Amusan fought back to match Switzerland’s Ditaj Kambundji stride for stride before being edged out on the line.

Kambundji stunned the field to win gold in 12.24 seconds, setting a new Swiss national record. The United States’ Grace Stark clinched bronze in 12.34 seconds.

The result means Amusan, an Ijebu Ode native, becomes the first Nigerian athlete to win a medal at the ongoing world championships.

She finished ahead of the Netherlands’ Nadine Visser and Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska, both of whom were strong contenders going into the final.

Elsewhere at the championships, Nigeria’s Ezekiel Nathaniel advanced to the semi-finals of the men’s 400m hurdles after winning heat 5 with a time of 48.37 seconds. In the long jump event, Charles Edward Godfred fell short of qualification, with his 7.79m leap not enough to reach the final.
