Dowen To Be ShutDown For Two Days Over Death Of Twelve-Year-Old Student

Dowen Secondary School has been closed due to the issue surrounding the reported death of Sylvester Oromoni, a 12-year-old student.

Dowen stated the school would be closed for two days due to the current situation in a statement on Friday.

The statement read, “In view of the situation concerning the school and considering the emotions of our students we have advised that our students stay home tomorrow Friday 3rd and Monday 6th December 2021.

“This will also afford the students opportunity to revise for their forthcoming examination starting next week.”

Oromoni’s death was made public after a family member, known as Perri, posted about it on social media on Thursday.

@PerrisOnoromoni, a family member, said that the Junior Secondary School 2 student died of internal injuries acquired during an assault by classmates who intended to initiate him into cultism.

He said this before his cousin died as a result of five students brutalizing him for refusing to join a cult.

Mrs. Adebisi Layiwola, Dowen College Principal, issued a statement denying any bullying or abuse on the student.

“The whole incident is strange and unbelievable because the school had effective anti-bullying policies and consequences are well spelled out to all the students,” the statement stated in part.

According to them, the initial inquiry revealed that the boy was not involved in any fighting, bullying, or other types of assault.

“He made no such reports, neither his sister who is also a student or any other students, prefects, house parents, medical staff, or any of the management staff.

“Furthermore, we state categorically Dowen College is built on core values of godliness and excellence and will not tolerate any acts of cultism, which is why there is nothing like that and there have never been such deviant activities as this is a faith-based school and effective policies are in place to prevent such occurrence,” they said in the statement.

Nigerians have asked for justice in response to the statement, which has sparked emotions on social media.
