Epidemics Emerge As Refuse Takeover Ibadan Main Roads

In some regions of Ibadan, epidemics such as cholera and other ailments such as malaria, fever, and diarrhea are currently soaring.

According to the Daily Post, garbage has taken over several of Ibadan’s major highways in both the urban and rural areas.

On Monday, a correspondent visited various districts of Ibadan and noticed that rubbish had taken over the medians of the city’s major roads.

Ibadan North, Ibadan North West, Ibadan South West, Ibadan South East, and Iddo local government areas have some of the major roadways taken over by waste.

Locations like Eleyele, Sango, Ijokodo, Bodija, and Dugbe were discovered to have their road medians were filled with trash.

This could result in epidemics such as cholera and other diseases spreading across the ancient metropolis.

The Daily Post reported earlier this month that refuse has taken over key roadways and streets in Ibadan.

However, it was discovered that refuse contractors and concerned ministries had done little to solve the situation.

It was also discovered that other than a few arrests, little has been done to remove the current waste off major highways.

The Oyo State Government announced on October 30th that it had detained no less than 80 people for violating environmental laws.

The state’s Environmental Task Force arrested them for breaking environmental laws.

Mr. Abiodun Oni, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, said the violators were apprehended at Ibadan’s Gate, Aleshinloye, Eleyele, Sabo, Apata, Iwo-road, Ojoo, Moniya, U.I-Agbowo, Sango, and General Gas sectors.

Apart from arrests and broadcast warnings to members of the public about the indiscriminate garbage disposal, it was discovered that little has been done to avoid infections that are currently brewing in the city.

All attempts to elicit a response from the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Abiodun Oni, and ministry officials to speak on the sudden spike of waste on key roadways were fruitless.

On Monday, several calls made to ministry officials’ phone numbers were unanswered.
