Escaped Chimpanzees Recaptured, Four Shot Dead

Three chimpanzees that had escaped their enclosure in a Swedish zoo were apprehended and put back in a safe area, while four others were killed by gunfire.

The remaining animals are now being cared for, and one that is injured is receiving medical attention, according to a statement from the Furuvik Zoo.

On Wednesday, the apes had escaped, with some of them managing to leave the residence they shared with monkeys. Because of the risk to the public, officials were obliged to shoot them. One was confirmed dead inside the monkey house, and two people were shot on the zoo’s property.

On Saturday, keepers were finally able to enter and discovered the body of a fourth chimpanzee.

“What has happened is a great tragedy and a huge failure of us,” the zoo said in a statement on Facebook. We all feel a huge sadness about what has happened and mourn our beloved chimps Linda, Torsten, Santino, and Manda.

“We are very keen to get to the bottom of how this could have happened and the investigation may show where we have (failed) or if we could have acted differently.”

The zoo named the three chimpanzees that were still alive Selma, Maria-Magdalena, and Tjobbe, and stated that Selma’s wounds were being attended to.
