Travis Scott has shared a statement on the crowds at his Astroworld Festival in Houston, Texas last night (November 5).

Texas police have confirmed that eight people died and hundreds were injured in a “mass casualty” incident.

“I am absolutely devastated by what happened last night,” Scott wrote on his social media accounts. “My prayers are with the families and all those affected by what happened at the Astroworld festival.”

He continued to offer his “total support” to the Houston Police Department in its “tragic loss of life” investigation. “I am committed to working closely with the Houston community to heal and support families in need,” the rapper said.

“Thanks to Houston PD, the Fire Department and NRG Park for their prompt response and support. Love you all.”

The tragic incident occurred during Scott’s headline performance at the event, which was attended by 50,000 people. Houston Fire Chief Samuel Pea said: “At around 9.15 a.m. the crowd began to narrow toward the front of the stage and it caused some panic and it caused some injuries.”

Pea later confirmed that 17 people were taken to hospital, including 11 in cardiac arrest. Reports also said that hundreds more were injured in the crush.

Scott is said to have stopped his performance several times when he saw fans in distress in front of the stage. Fans also climbed onto platforms where a camera crew was filming the incident and tried to seek help from those caught in the boom.

The rapper’s statement follows a statement shared on the official Astroworld account. That message read: “Our hearts are with the Astroworld Festival family tonight – especially those we lost and their loved ones.

“We are focused on supporting the local authorities however we can. Keeping this in mind, now there will be no festival on Saturday.
