Motherhood: Gratitude – An Important Virtue Needed For Children’s Emotional Growth 9

One aspect of having a loving personality is gratitude. It entails appreciating the things we frequently take for granted, such as family, friends, food, and a place to live. It entails identifying and naming the little things that make us grateful. As discussed in my previous articles, among other things, gratitude can benefit your child’s physical and mental health through increased happiness, better sleep, reduced stress, and higher self-esteem.

Children do not typically display gratitude. Time and extensive learning are required. As you teach your child the act of gratitude, they start to express it in many different ways as they grow older.

As we begin to teach our children this important virtue, we must let them know what genuine gratitude is. It is pertinent that we emphasize that genuine gratitude goes beyond a simple “thank you.” Genuine gratitude involves thinking, effort, and more than simply doing the right thing. Both the giver and the recipient benefit from gratitude. The act of making a child say “thank you” does not teach them to consider what they are grateful for and why. Real thankfulness requires patience and consistent role modeling by adults.

Is it worth the effort? Yes, it does. Some of the reasons why we must reach our kids through the act of gratitude were discussed in my previous article. Others are;

Gratitude Boosts Self-Esteem

It has been demonstrated that gratitude lowers social comparisons, boosts one’s self-esteem in both social and athletic contexts, and helps one recognize and celebrate others’ successes. A grateful child demonstrates these behaviors and attitudes, which boosts their general self-esteem.

Gratitude Enhances Mental Health
Resentment, protracted wrath, envy, protracted grief, and regret are just a few of the toxic feelings that gratitude has been found to lessen. According to research, people who express the act of gratitude over time, tend to have higher levels of happiness, life-satisfaction, and lower rate of anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts,
